As something becomes a status symbol, there is an increase in demand. This demand can very easily overcome a increase in price.

To claim that price is the only factor that controls demand is simply an error.

For some people, drugs are status symbols. But I don't think that would be the main factor to control prices. BTW I never claimed demand was unrelated to price. I said that sometimes a increase in price can cause an increase in demand.

Addiction would be another reason that could cause people to overlook prices and even buy more. And these wouldn't be the only factors.
