We'll know in 3-6 months if the "surge" was the magic bullet or just the last sad chapter in the parade of stumbles before common sense prevailed and the US withdraws to peripheral bases, leaving the Iraqis to sort out their own future. I am not optimistic, based on the track record so far, and what I see in the Iraqi political leadership. Been there and done that.

The chattering classes like Brooks won't have any impact on the success on the ground. And the voters won't be conned into ignoring the lady behind the curtain this time.

Mary, the interesting thing to me about today's Brooks' column in the NYTimes is that he's embracing the notion of a soft partition as the only way to avoid a civil war bloodbath. That's a large change of heart for Brooks, who was an early and frequent supporter of the democracy in the ME notion.

My goodness that liberalised New York Times which is attacked with such venom on some threads here allows an article from David Brooks ? (:)
