You keep coming back to 'insurance'. Perhaps it would help if you picture the govt. as the insurance company?? Like any insurance co., the govt. determines what it will cover, i.e. pay for. Cancer or any catastrophic illness would be covered, I would think, since that is where the uninsured get wiped out.

There is no "AMA monopoly." Many physicians don't belong to AMA, just as many lawyers don't belong to American Bar Association. These are just lobbying groups.

What is necessary is a state license, which you can get if you pass the boards and jump through all the other hoops.

My niece is a resident in Georgia after two years at an offshore medical school and passing the boards.
