I read them and if i am not mistaken it was also an Asia Times article. I am not disparaging AT but it is just one view. However i am sympathetic.
Here's what i would do if i were US pres, God forbid
1. I would enter into talks with Iran, albeit secret at first.
2. I would be after a comprehensive peace between US and Iran and in the region as well.
3. I would expect them to help in iraq to stabilize the situation for their benefit as well as US. This might eventually lead to a breakup of colonial boundary iraq into three components. Shiaaa may have to cede bagdad as sarman says or at least be willing to live in Sunni portion as a minority.
4. Both sides push syria and israel respectively for a Golan deal.
5. Both sides commit to israel/pal peace thus perhaps gaining some hizbolla and hamas support while isolating al aqsa and the other sunni terror orgs in Palestine. Iran and Israel exchznge ambassadors and grant mutual recognition.
6. I would allow the continuation of the iran nuke program under certain circumstances.
a. no more crazy presidents(not talking about bush here)--yes US insinuation in the iran political process as part of the deal. Personally i would like to think mullahs would be happy to reign in their religious right.
b. Sophisticated checks and balances by the West in cooperation with iran to prevent nuclear technology leakage to terrorist groups.
c. discussion on how to make mideast nuke free including israel. (Personally i think iran nukes are inevitable and not necessarily a bad thing pertaining to control of mutual real enemy al quaeda).
7. A new slate on economic relations between Washington and Tehran. Wipe the slate clean. No more talk of the shah, the embassy takeover, the holocaust denialism, rejectionism on israel etc. Unfreeeze assets. Iran needs US to offset growing dependence on china and russia.
