It is completely possible to make a basic WCDMA phone without any application processor, (if the target is really to make a phone with the same functionality as a basic CDMA or GSM phone). And by the way has been done.

I still must say, Slacker: I don't want to argue with you. To my mind (which is totally challenged here) you actually know what you are talking about.

That is because everybody else is trying to keep 3G as "high end". That is how it is now, but does not really tell what COULD be done (as said, the cost difference between GSM and GSM/WCDMA multimode, when all the other functionality is exactly the same is, around $10. WCDMA vs. CDMA is actually less).
