Re: You have absolutely no idea how Barcelona will perform in server apps per clock and you are writing its obituary already ! As always your inability to understand the technology will leave you late to the party again. It will be 10-40% better than Clovertown per clock.

Is 10-40% on dual-socket systems? Which CPUs? A 2.3GHz Barcelona vs. 2.67GHz Clovertown? Do you expect the overall average to be between 10-40%, or do you expect a 10% minimum performance increase? Which benchmarks would be used? What if most of the benchmarks used in reviews aren't FP intensive?

I'm not sure, if "per clock" has been stated somewhere. However, this could actually be a worse statement than if Randy would have meant, that both the best offerings of the two companies would be compared. That actually depends on the roadmaps and if both will deliver.

But there is another problem with perception of Barcelona's performance:
Most people just seem to look at the SSE upgrade and clock frequency, but forget to include the effects of the other changes to the core.

Just think of any of the many listed changes to bring about 1% or more improved IPC (otherwise they wouldn't have spent the design effort to implement it) besides huge performance gainers like the SSE upgrade. All that we have to add to current DC K8's (err.. K9's) performance minus the obvious frequency decrease.

It's funny to watch the fantasies get ever more extreme as the facts emerge. Now that Barcelona clockspeeds and launch dates are known to be DREADFUL, the last of the faithful invent magical IPC advantages to keep their dreams alive.

That these same faithful insisted on 2.8GHz QC parts, then 2.5GHz QC parts, and are now faced with 2.3GHz QC parts... does not bother them in the least.

You should know better when you read such wild, vague claims from AMD executives.
