I agree with just buying the oil when we need it, but the longer term goal should be to get off the oil so we aren't funding despots. High oil prices equal the rolling back of democracies and the increasing of the number of despots around the world. We should not be contributing to that trend.

Depends on if we're concerned with Americans (fund the despots, let them keep their populations under control and neven a threat to America) or whether we're concerned with all the people on the planet (in which cash we shouldn't fund the despot since we disapprove of his affect on his population, even though he causes no harm to us). Isolationist should have no problem buying oil from despots, its internationalists (who want to improve the lives of the despot's subjects) that have the problem with it.
