Gem, in order for democracy to really take root and flourish, it seems to me that it would need to come forth from a society that felt repressed. WE may see mideastern societies as being repressed, but do THEY themselves feel that way? Most of the dictatorships seem to me to be fairly benign. Perhaps the average man in the Arab world is content with a simple life, lots of children, and a religious community that readily provides assistance and even welfare when necessary.
