If both are done to correct short sightedness, he'll experience some deficit in seeing things close up.

If he does one of each, that problem is lessened.

M... since we spoke earlier this morning, I've been making a concentrated effort to read and compute with just my left eye, covering my right. This just isn't working for me. My left eye vision isn't sharp enough by itself for reading or close work. I can see near things very clearly with both uncorrected eyes right now, but not distance. I don't know what I'm gonna do now. I'm thinking of having both eyes done for distance, then continue with my reading glasses. Not what I wanted but I need clear near vision, as well. Given this uncertainty, I would opt to stay with my contacts, but my eyes have gotten too dry to continue.
