That is my tendency as well, although I haven't made a commitment to it. In our venue, political debates change no minds. They are merely a way to vent, and sometimes venting is ALL they are.

Actually, we too have all but stopped even talking about it though you would not have gathered that from my recent posts.

And I think you are quite right when you said, "in an effort to keep myself happy".

I am so much better than I was several years ago. I know my positions. I know how I think and feel. I know how I will or will not vote and why subject myself continually, as I used to do, to the constant 'opinions' and 'talking heads'.

When I write now, mostly I write without anger or frustration. That is a HUGE step forward for me!!
If people around me want to talk when we all get together, I listen, but for the most part don't participate. I don't have to do so. All I have to do is give an answer if asked.
If one doesn't continue the conversation (imagine me saying THAT hehehe) the conversation will eventually die and one can get around to other happier topics.

I tend to care to deeply and don't plan to change.
And in truth - sometimes I still get angry... LOL... and have to take myself to task.

I am so glad that politics can be posted or discussed here, however I am more than equally glad that except for a few disagreements about how or what should be done, most seem to be of the orientation that I am... Facing the right way.. hehehe ;) <wink>
