Yes, but all the heads of the hydra had to be cut off.

I wasn't advocating doing that. I was saying that that would have been the only way to actually kill the hydra, and "succeed."

Several historians (Tacitus and Josephus, to name two) said of Roman conquests something like, "They made it a desert and called it peace."

It is a reductio ad absurdum argument against the whole venture, in case I have to spell it out.
