Half the postcards in the rack at the kiosk at Bamako, Mali airport are pictures of the big Anglo gold mine, townsite etc. They sure are some proud of that mine!

Last night I watched the episode of Michael's Palin's travel series Sahara where he visits Tomboctou. It is quite surreal to see these poverty-stricken descendants of a very rich empire trying to eke out a living amidst the crumbling if still majestic mud brick edifices that were state of the art worldwide when they were built 6 or 7 centuries ago.

I can think of certain proclaimers of empire these days who could learn a few lessons from what has happened to Mali.

I highly recommend all of Palin's travel series. See palinstravels.co.uk
