"We know that the explosively formed projectiles are manufactured in Iran. What I would not say is that the Iranian government per se knows about this," Pace replied. "It is clear that Iranians are involved and it is clear that materials from Iran are involved. But I would not say based on what I know that the Iranian government clearly knows or is complicit."

Well, if the Iranian Government doesn't know, they certainly should.

It's actually a fairly clever comment, though, though it's not clear whether that's intentional. It leaves the Iranians with a face-saving opening: if they want to defuse things further, they can say that they didn't know and weren't complicit, punish a few people, and calm the situation down a bit.

Either an accident, or a nice little gambit... we'll see.

Asked about the briefing during a visit Monday to Canberra, Australia, Pace said he couldn't substantiate the assertion that the clerical regime in Tehran is shipping such devices to Shiite militias in Iraq.

I saw Pace talk on C-Span before he was appointed to chair the JCS. He struck me then as a straight shooter (though you can never really tell with these top level military guys--the one thing you know about them for sure is that they are bureaucratic survivors).

Perhaps he is a straight shooter. He almost certainly will get into trouble now for the above comment, unless they are planning a "good cop, bad cop" maneuver to put just a moderate amount of heat on Iran. The whole thing is becoming... Byzantine.
