<<I believe in a strong separation of church and state, but if a religious organization runs a charitable or non-profit hospital or school or other human service facility and sets it up so it is completely distinct from their religious function, I think there is no reason to treat the distinct human service facility exactly the same as a human service facility run by non-religious groups.>>

One of the local Lutheran Churches runs a school. Spends about half of what the regular schools do and produces a much better educated person.

The purpose of school vouchers is to get kids out of bad schools and introduce competition between the public and private school systems.

Unfortunately, I think the most likely consequence of school vouchers would be to turn public schools into dysfunctional dumping grounds for the kids of parents who don't give a shit.

I don't like the idea of vouchers; it seems chickenshit to me. I like the idea of squaring off withe the problem and making public schools work. Unfortunately, that means taking on the NEA, and the politicians haven't got the cojones to do it.

First, Catholic hospitals have long been around, and the fact they receive medicare payments is the same as any hospital receiving medicare payments. This example doesn't support your argument.

It doesn't matter what the GOALS of vouchers are. The REALITY is that vouchers involve the govt. funding of private enterprise, which seems to me to be an expansion of the govt. not a contraction. If govt. funds a voucher program, then doesn't it take on the oversight responsibilities of private school performance?

Ditto for the Bushies efforts to get taxpayer money into faith based programs. I would hope those Bushies have a plan for oversight, don't you? Or is the plan to just drop-ship pallets of cash to various churches and schools as they did in Iraq and say 'here you go!!'

I thought you guys believed in shrinking the role of government.
