but either weren't trained enough or were too conventional in the overall thinking to do the insurgencies and nation-building, or the peacekeeping.

Could we have known that before we went in? Has there really ever been a war like this one?

Every war we have been in was started by and/or followed by some kind of insurgency. We still had German terrorists killing American soldiers in Germany in the 60s and 70s.

SF knew the insurgency would follow. They alerted the command structure. They prepared for it. sadly the rest of DOD and the US Government did not.

After our military won WWII, we used a massive aid plan to get the West European countries on their feet. We flooded Germany with US lawyers to assist in writing federal and local laws and setting up judicial systems. We created business opportunities for locals. The Iraqis are receiving little to none of this kind of support. That is a monumental error.

I saw W on TV yesterday explaining the demands he placed on Iraqis. He needs to place demands on appropriate US Government agencies too. He needs to develop a "Marshall Plan" for Iraq. Our military alone is not sufficient support for that which he wishes to accomplish.

Our military won phase 1 of the war and can help with security. But soldiers are not and have never been nation builders.
