Koan, from a vantage point outside the US, with very few exceptions your Democrats and Republican are all so far to the right that they appear to be just branches of the same governing party.

I agree.

The division has little to do with a coherent philosophy of government though.

The Republicans are now the party of self serving greed. Personal immediate gain is paramount to their political motivation and they will utilize any strategy to achieve it.

The destruction of the economy and participation in wars whose sole objective is maintaining their political power are embraced as means justifying ends.

This is why we observe so many bizarre political postures on the part of the GOP. They do whatever they need to do to retain power.

If this means passing a law to keep a person in a permanent vegetative state on life support, or asserting that the Grand Canyon is no more that 10,00 years old, so be it.

It keeps some of the nut-case factions in the fold.
