I didn't say negotiating was necessarily a good thing. You can't negotiate with some people. If Germans [who had lots of "steel" in their backbones too] had the brains to not vote for the Nazis, they wouldn't have got into the mess. If Japanese had the brains not to try to build an empire using weapons, and Great Britain had supported China's stability and development instead of forcing colonial outposts, instead of leaving it open to Japan's takeover, the Pacific war might have been avoided too.

It's better to avoid the problems than sort it out with steel [literal or character].

For example, Mqurice the Great advised the USA to sort out Iraq and the dreaded WMDs with NUN reconstitution and global democracy rather than go the COWard way in a vengeful and premature attack. Things would by now be so hunky dory if Mq's programme had been adopted.

The "steel" approach has not been a success overall, though there have been some successes [such as Libya caving in on their nuclear bomb materials imports, Saddam losing his sons and his life which must make Iran's, North Korea's and others a bit wary about being too stroppy].

It's not too late to get the NUN under way. But it will involve the USA not thinking they will be King Kong before which all must kneel. Heard of democracy? It could reasonably apply on a global scale [even women would be allowed to vote if they contribute cash].
