Gib - long rant:
Sent this to EC on another discussion, I have spliced together two replies into one, thought it might be appropriate here.
We in Canada are undergoing the same, if not more, manipulation and sensorship than what occurred during Hitler's rant. Views such as this would not be very newsworthy as they are not nice and tug at the heartstrings of Canadians, but instead would be seen as against the sensibilities of society. I have also been informed of this by my wife and partner in life that my views would not be very newsworthy either. I would also add that our society has been designed and orchestrated to encourage this societal aspect.
I am a firm believer that one must not forget the past for it is a good predictor of the future, especially where we humans are involved. With our politicians, they are presently posturing for the electorate. My wife mentioned that the female electorate do not appreciate the lack of progress in the health and education arena by the Harper government. Prior to the last election, her peers were very displeased with the liberals; however, they still intended to vote liberal because they did not trust Harper. I submit it was not trust, but maybe more along the lines of some hard fact and truth, or even a misunderstanding of the realities of where we are with regards to the state of the economy and our so called self-elevated pretense that we are a world player, that would not be easy to swallow.
Additionally, you could add that our tax system is designed this way, such that until you achieve a certain amount of critical mass in wealth, the tax system will keep the masses close together in net income so that the electorate that makes less money does not see others improving their lot in life.
We are also ingrained with the necessity to continually go to the perverbial trough to get whatever we need. I remember Ms Rice saying at a dinner in Vancouver that we Canadians sure know how to take care of people regardless of how long they have been here.
As for the Government, our society dictates what we do. It is unfortunate that our population seems to think that there is a two tier system with the public servants getting a better lot in life than the rest. We must remember that the electorate has voted in the governments that have in essence, snubbed the Canadian electorate after getting in. We have a democratic, socialist dictatorship in Canada. Democratic because we have the illusion of democracy when we get to vote, socialist because the electorate wants the government to take care of them regardless of the price, and dictatorship because once in power they never go back to the electorate, but rely soley on polls that consist of questions that really do not allow one to view an opinion, and international opinion and agreements such as Kyoto. This allows our politicians to have plausible denial in that they never made the decision, just went along with the herd. As Dion mentioned during the Liberal leadership race and that has been reiterated in advertisements, making priorities is not easy. Dion forgets or does not know that that is the responsibility and duty of the leader of this Country, to make priorities and decisions, and that these should be Canada's priorities and decisions, based on our requirements; however, since they never go back to the electorate it shouldn't be such a big deal I would think.
As an aside, I am also of the conviction that we need a referendum on Kyoto. Dion, whom I think is a dottering idiot, pardon my rant, is bent on destroying our economy, or he is the cagiest liberal politician since Trudeau. I think we need to go to the electorate, because as Dion mentioned during a press conference, MPs will vote according to their constituents wants, nobody phoned and asked me or other friends that I have canvassed.
I also mentioned again over our breakfast this morning, that our economy is extremely fragile and as such, any adherence without due diligence towards the ramifications of what will happen should a misguided policy be put in place, will be dissasterous. Additionally, having Bob Rae involved gives me good reason to want to immigrate to Kiwi or Aussi land.
Additionally I have to say the following: A once senior political figure, Mr Lloyd Axworthy when in politics, went to Bosnia where he was aghast at what was happening and could not believe that these events could be. A man with his head in the sand, or just a Canadian that refuses to believe that all is not nice in Kansas. Martin as well, publicly stated that what is happening in Afganastan was not what he envisioned. fancy that. The Liberals procrastinated sufficiently long enough that when they put their oar in the water, the only areas left to be occupied by a NATO force was hotbeds of extremists, hence our being up to our arse in alligators and NO ONE wants to drain the swamp, or assist. My last rant is Cretian standing up in the house of commons and stating categorically that so what if a few million dollars were stole in the province of Quebec, it's a small price to pay for keeping our country together. You or I would still be in jail. This may be one sided against the liberals, but when you are the reigning power in government, you accept the good with the bad, don't have a lot of good to say in their favour. It would also imply that our politicians; however esteemed they feel or how high the pulpit is, are less worldly than they would like us to think.
I digress and maybe should put more energy and time into my investments instead of thinking about politics and get to a point in my fiscal life so that the acts of the few will not impact on me.
Being realistic, this will not be in the short term. Until then I shall endeavour to persevere, and be a good Canadian, accepting the fact that there is a group of Canadians who know better than I how I should live and think, and that I, with the modest income I have, should share with those who are less fortunate or that just arrive, for it is partially my fault, as I was born into this great western society, and as such I owe these poor unfortunates.
Your most humble and ever-serving Canadian.
