Elroy, it is often a necessity for a person who writes about a country to have lived there and experienced it. A japanese writing about ME would carry no credibility if I was to buy the book.

I just finished Holy Land, Whose Land? Modern Dilemma, Ancient Roots by Dorothy Drummond. It offers no solutions, but is (imo) a fascinating account of the history of the region with an emphasis on the three major religions and the current conflict.

It is pretty basic with a lot of great maps and a glossary of terms. My guess is it isn't a book for scholars, and probably has a lot of statements with which the really knowledgeable would take issue merely because she has simplified, but I think she tries hard to be objective, and it was very readable.
