I'm intrigued by historical parallel - was there a similar seminal Olympic event that marked the American ascendancy of the 1920s?

I think I would phrase that differently:

The Chinese will try whatever they can to prevent a market blow off. But historically, interventions are designed to prevent a collapse and end up causing a bigger bust and uncontrollable fallout.

But of course they'll do what they can to minimize the damage (and therefore will increase the damage). And maybe they will create a much bigger bust post-Olympics and therefore consider their intervention a success. That's not at all like our own Fed, is it? <ggg>
