That Mel looks like a financial genius in this deal. Mr. Ray has whined on about "The Stern Deal" for the last several years. The huge costs of the contract, etc. So far Sirius has paid ~$350 million dollars to Stern. Yet, it's the Stern Deal that has propelled Sirius's subscriber growth "and their market capitalization" to a point of being over 1 Billion Dollars "via the dumber retail investors" higher than XM's "institutional smart money". With the "merger". Sirius has in effect, "monetized" that 1 Billion dollar higher market capitalization into the "merger of equals". Sirius is in effect paying XM with the 1 Billion dollar higher market capitalization that was "found money" via "The Stern Deal". Now the best is yet to come.. Because XM shareholders will in effect be paying 1/2 of the costs of the rest of Stern's future contract payments. Absolute brillance! Mel tuned Stern into a Billion Dollars via the higher market capitalization and higer Growth rates.."at any costs" as David Ray would remind us. Then he only pays Stern ~350 million to date, then he turns that 1 Billion dollar gain in market capitalization into cold hard cash by monitizing it in the "merger of equals". In other words.. The absolute costs to SIRI of the Stern deal was NOTHING! Actually, SIRIUS has made a gain of will over a Half a Billion Dollars on Stern. Stern works for FREE for SIRI and XM is picking up the tab!! Of course, now that the two companies are header for a merger, than in my opinion will never happen. SIRI will start working with XM's OEM's to design and integrate dual band receivers into their cars in 2008/2009 model years. So if the whole deal get's a pass by the DOJ or the FCC. It is plausable that SIRI will get it's radio's into XM's OEM pipeline. PRICELESS, absolutely PRICELESS. PCSTEL
