The scenarios you describe as Islamic seem incomprehensibly unacceptable and foriegn to my way of thinking and living as well. I am sure you played the game as a kid where a kid would get a written message and then would whisper in the ear of a person next to them and there would be a chain of whisperers. At the end of which the last whisperer would say out loud what he heard and everyone would laugh at how different it was than the original message. Of course this would be in the presence of well intentioned story tellers. With regards to the tales you've heard or read about honor killings. I suspect they are partly or wholy true, and I find that to be unacceptable behavior, and have no hesitation labeling it murder. It is not common or pervasive. You said that the murderers in these situations are never punished. You are wrong about that, although there are regions of the world where law and order are lax and tribal culture does support stupid and brutal traditions like this. Bestiality and homosexuality likewise. Although you will find the prevalence a fraction of what it is in the west and in most regions taboo and completely unknown. So as a comparative comment, you should wonder why these things become so salient in a discussion that claims to be getting at the truth of Islam, I don't wonder about it but you should. Do you know many cheating wives and girl friends are seriously beaten or killed each year in America, over a man's honor/humiliation. Beheadings seem to me totally unacceptable also. Yet we are not that far in time from the Guilatine, and linchings, so its not like we can't relate at all. And in countries where this is still an execution of legal sentencing, the crime rate is practically nothing. I still would vote against it here. "Where is the public stigma and what is the penalty for some of the Islam’s more heinous seeming crimes, like as murder?" I don't know what you mean. Murder is a capital offense in most of Islamic governments. The other stuff like cutting off a thiefs hand is still a law but the execution of that is becoming less and less frequent especially in countries with more techno advancement. There are all kinds of special circumstances that offer forgiveness or lessoned sentencing." Animosity was the rule between Jews and Christians and between the various subsets of Christianity – Catholic vs. Protestant – and this persisted for centuries. The same is apparent within Islam – Shiite, Sunni, etc. Right. You are not a child and if you are religious I am certain that you have seen the explanations of what is wrong with other major Christian religious sects (I'm assuming you have a Christian heritage). It gets pretty intense in some circles doesn't it. I expect no less when religious people need to validate their own religion and most agree, in this moment in time, that Islam is out side the circle of all the rest. All I ask is that when you see information coming from people who are pissed off at Muslims you consider the source and use a reasonable level of skepticism and critical analysis before making your mind up about things. Most Muslims in the world are living in relative peaceful coexistence with their neighbors; including the ten million or so in North America that are your neighbors. The bottom line is we are discussing something that is not our culture and given the bigger picture is not Islam either, it is something that happens in odd little regions of the world that have an Islamic Heritage. Lots of odd stuff and lots of incomprehensibly unacceptable stuff is happening that isn't foriegn and isn't Islam. Welcome to the world, Eden aint here and no religion claims to have made this a perfect world. In fact, the Bible, the Quran and other holy books do a very good job of telling us what we can expect from the corrupt hypocrits and evil doers in our midst, the one's within each respective religion as well as the foriegn type. They tell the truth not just what we wish were true.
