I love hybrid technology, but I hate the way it's being portrayed as "environmentally friendly."

No it isn't. It just consumes somewhat less gas, but not as much as people believe. Look at the Honda Accord Sedan, then look at its hybrid version. EPA MPG goes from 24/34 to 28/35. Not very impressive.

Still nothing beats the old-fashioned ways of conserving gas: Carpooling, taking mass transit, living close to work, buying smaller cars, etc. But that's not as newsworthy as the Toyota "Pious" ...
