It just consumes somewhat less gas, but not as much as people believe. Look at the Honda Accord Sedan, then look at its hybrid version. EPA MPG goes from 24/34 to 28/35. Not very impressive. Still nothing beats the old-fashioned ways of conserving gas: Carpooling, taking mass transit, living close to work, buying smaller cars, etc. But that's not as newsworthy as the Toyota "Pious" ...
