NIce to hear Tata is still an avid proponent of CDMA...though it always worries me when people talk about the lower radiation of CDMA handsets. That hasnt mattered in any other country and it wont matter in India. They should just emphasize lower prices and better services....

Tata Tele banks on CDMA to garner 20% market share

TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ SUNDAY, MARCH 04, 2007 02:04:07 AM]

Bangalore: Aiming at a subscriber base of 100 million by 2011 and garnering 20% marketshare, Tata Teleservices, the leading telecom operator is betting on the CDMA technology and higher brand visibility to reach this target.

Tata Teleservices, with presence in 20 circles and a subscriber base touching 18 million by the end of this fiscal, is looking at doubling it every year.

Darryl Green, the CEO of Tata Teleservices, said it has already doubled its marketshare from 5 to 10% in the last one year. Tata Teleservices has been one of the later entrants into the telecom sector and placed its bets on the upcoming CDMA technology, though the adoption has been a wee bit slower when compared to GSM.

Mr Green said that CDMA has matured as a technology and claimed that its numerous advantages will give it the edge over GSM in the future. This would be more applicable when India’s telecom scenario move into 3G regime and will see higher use of value added services through mobiles.

Tata Teleservices is also geared up for an image makeover. The company plans to move from scheme-based advertising, that it has focussed on the past to technology-based advertising.

“We plan to aggressively focus on our brand image. We want to tell consumers about the CDMA technology. Recently TRAI conducted a study on quality testing and Tata Teleservices emerged as a leader in 12 circles. Also, studies have shown that CDMA phones emit only 1/8th of the electromagnetic radiation that is emitted by GSM phones. Its these aspects that we plan to highlight through our new brand exercise,” added Mr Green.

The company has always adopted the celebrity route to enhance its brand image and it included personalities from the world of cricket and films. Irfan Pathan, Saurav Ganguly, Ajay Devgan and Kajol have been endorsing the brand. While continuing with these brand ambassadors, Tata Tele has no plans of adding any new celebrities.

The Tata Group has already lined up an investment of Rs 36,000 crore for the telecom sector. Tata Teleservices has invested Rs 3,000 crore in the current fiscal. Mr Green said it would continue to invest in setting up the infrastructure as well as making a very strong rural foray.

amazing how far people will reach

Maybe Keitel's great unspeakable secret is that Barry West changed his mind. Reaching is a way of life when you're starved for information.

Dont you think that the $3 billion dollars would show up on Sprint's balance sheet....and if it was off balance sheet financing (say future handset discounts) that they might have mentioned that to keep their stock price from a multi-year low?

So I assume you have combed through Sprint's balance sheet and identified any possible odd increases that could be from Intel? And how would future obligations for milestone payments show up in this balance sheet combing? What about subsidies for trials and expenses for trialing the system? These have not occcurred yet, but if Intel is picking up the tab they would not show up on the Balance Sheet in any case.

Notice the statement below by Intel about its partnership with Sprint. Partnerships can take many forms, from equity investments, agreements for milestone progress, payment of development costs etc.

Sprint And Intel To Explore WiMAX Broadband Technologies
Next Generation Networks And Interactive Multi-Media Services Are Envisioned

Overland Park, Kan. and Santa Clara, Calif. - May 5, 2005. Sprint (NYSE: FON) and Intel Corporation today announced an agreement to engage in joint efforts to advance the development of IEEE standards-based 802.16e WiMAX mobile technology, which can provide high capacity wireless broadband coverage and services throughout metro areas and an enriched multimedia user experience.

The companies will collaborate on technical specifications, perform equipment trials and conduct interoperability testing to examine possible next generation wide-area wireless broadband devices and services. Ubiquitous wireless broadband access will help meet blossoming demand among businesses and consumers for rapid wireless Internet connectivity and integrated multimedia services.

"Our relationship with Intel will help validate requirements, drive key ecosystem development needs, formulate network strategies and define the potential for advanced wireless services adoption," explained Oliver Valente, Chief Technology Officer and Vice President, Technology Development at Sprint. Sprint is fostering a number of strategic partnerships and investigating multiple technologies in support of future wireless interactive multimedia services that would be considered for deployment in the 2.5 GHz band of spectrum. WiMAX is one of the technologies Sprint is investigating for these services.

"WiMAX technology has the promise to deliver new broadband services to consumers globally," said Sean Maloney, executive vice president and general manager of the Intel Mobility Group. "We are excited to work closely with Sprint to bring these new services and new networks to the market."

WiMAX, short for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a standards-based wireless technology that provides high-throughput broadband connections. WiMAX will provide fixed, nomadic, portable and eventually mobile wireless broadband connectivity without the need for direct line-of-sight with a base station.

In January, Sprint joined the WiMAX Forum and was recently elected to the Board of Directors to lend its support and network expertise to that organization's mission of global interoperability standards formation for broadband wireless access products.
