That was my point. They came to Greenland and outstripped it's resources. It was not so much a matter whether there was a bit more pasture when they arrived than when they died out, they did not manage the resources they had nor did they cultivate any alternatives. They tried to live in Greenland as if they were on the Gulf Stream in Norway. They were maxed out in consumption, and so when there was some fluctuation they went through a collapse, not a decline.

According to my records, in 1397 the Vikings merged with the Danish, changed the name of their plundering from "danegold ransom money" to the inspired and politically correct name "17.5% VAT" and have been living off the fat of Europe ever since... never looked back. That's why they gave up on Greenland,... not worth the trouble -g-
