The conventional wisdom about Barack Obama is that he’s smart and charismatic but so inexperienced that we should feel jittery about him in the Oval Office.

But that view is myopic. In some respects, Mr. Obama is far more experienced than other presidential candidates.

His experience as an antipoverty organizer in Chicago, for example, gives him a deep grasp of a crucial 21st-century challenge — poverty in America — that almost all politicians lack. He says that grass-roots experience helps explain why he favors not only government spending programs, like early childhood education, but also cultural initiatives, like efforts to promote responsible fatherhood.

How come this issue never came up when Bush ran? Here he was....a part time governor......playing with his thing most of the time. Clearly, that doesn't come anywhere close to preparing someone for the presidency. In the meantime, Obama will have been a Senator for 3-4 years when he runs. How much experience do you need? And really how can any job prepare you to be president of the US? What we do know is that he is much brighter than Bush and appears to be far more competent. That will do it for me.

BTW I keep thinking about Brian William's report last nite from Iraq where he was showing us that the surge was working. It felt so much like a dog and pony show. Now I know Williams is not that stupid to fall for something like that......so I have to wonder.......did he do that in repayment for getting to interview Bush recently? Frankly, I don't trust any of them anymore.
