Not just industry, but everyday lives. About 13% of the population served in the military in WWII, today the figure is less than half a percent on active duty. You had "war bonds", and blacking out cities at night, and massive propaganda efforts. Just about every family had someone involved in the war.

Military budgets where larger in WWII than today, despite the much smaller economy. And I'm not just talking about percentage of GDP but in real dollar terms.


Because only 6% serve in the army doesn't make our society less militaristic. Militaristic is a state of mind. Nearly everything in our society is touched by that mindset.....from video games to tv shows to the toys kids play and the costumes they wear at Halloween to the guns lying around people's houses. And that kind of thinking is encouraged.

To know how much Americans think militaristically, you need to spend some time outside the culture.
