That is not what I was talking about. My point was about knowledge synthesis. It is possible to make great leaps with a lot of thinking in a corner and zero (or almost zero) experimentation. Of course, "pure thought" detached from all observation is absurd. But then again so is pure experimentation devoid of logical constraints. We are talking about the relative mix here.
