"I agree that the US is the Great Consumer. But there are about 6 billion people out there who would like to have the refrigerator and color tv and car and every other thing that US households enjoy."

The sticking point is, these developing economies grow first not by producing products for their own consumption, but by producing higher margin products for export to America. So when the American consumer sneezes, these developing economies will get pneumonia. Someday they will have a strong economic interdependence in which the USA will be only one player among many, but right now, it is THE player. JMO.
