When the Brits drew up the borders of Iraq they just glommed together the pre-existing Ottoman vilayets (provinces) of Mosul, Bagdad and Basra. But everybody was mixed together except the Kurds, who should have got a state but were left high and dry.

Kurdistan is tricky. If they declare independence they will find all the Kurds from the neighboring countries have just turned up on their doorstep as penniless refugees. That's how the neighbors will save themselves from future Kurdish problems.
