But many border towns rely on cross border traffic. My parents have passports, so do I, but if you are used to running over the border for gas, or for the afternoon, and you do not travel outside Canada, or outside the US, getting a passport to go an get a quart of milk or to go for dinner is likely not on. But it doesn't matter anyway. Of course there is going to be some pain in closing the border. Kids out for a pub crawl in Niagara Falls will not be going to the other Niagara Falls unless everyone has a passport. If you are going to be secure and require passports, there is a price to pay. accept it, and prepare to pay it. Tourism will need some help, why is that such a big deal. Yes Canadian Schoolkids will likely stay home. So will American kids who used to make their first foreign trip to Toronto or Montreal, why get upset about it? You can tell me about couples with passports who go to florida, my relatives flew to florida and Arizona, they have passports. Lots of people don't have them, lots of people clogged government offices getting them. So it will end up that the trips running across the border are going to drop. I am not the least bit critical of the passport program, but I think it is going to change things. So what? It means that the guy with a boat in lewiston New York might not go to Niagara on the lake for dinner. and vice versa. It might make a difference in the Thousand islands for the boat tours. Some of them stop in the US, they will just have to check for Passports on those boats who do and those who do not will continue as they are.. Since the change was announced, things have been slowing down. Did you think that every Canadian or every american within 50 miles of the border was simply going to get a passport? That isn't going to happen. Accepting it, and preparing for it, will make the transition easier. it will not make a difference to most Canadians or most Americans, just those on the border. Surely the Republicans can get their minds around the idea that this level of security is going to cost some people money, and figure out how to give them some help before CNN picks it up.
