"But war there is likely to be regional rather than one country, although it is possible all the fighting will be in and for control of Iraq.

It might start out regionally but I doubt oil dependent countries would be willing to sit on the side lines for long. I hope we don't have to find out.

If Saudi intervenes on the side of the Sunnis

This is the part that I find sort of hard to understand. My understanding of Saudis is similar to what you wrote, overweight, welfare-state sacks that boss around their low wage maid and driver while they sip tea, eat shwarma, and discuss the Koran. How do you take that collection of obese chair sitters and give them a gun and send them off to fight for the Sunnis in Iraq? Maybe they could hire and send in Sudanese mercenaries, but the idea of a ferocious Saudi army doesn't quite ring true from my understanding of their people.

It's like saying the people of Monaco are going to invade Germany - it aint gonna happen.

I dont see regional war. The shiaa will be very happy to have the kurds go their own way and western iraq fall to saudi, jordan and syria---some sort of anbaristine cancer in the middle of sunniland. Parts of iraq on the borders will be contested but Iran is not as much interested in land as in shiaa folks and oil in the south. Border disputes can be settled. Bagdad poses a problem though and would likely be a flashpoint for sunni-shiaa as is jerusalem between jew and arab.
