Pete,

I take it that all this means is that like using a DSL or Cable connection, your card would have to log into the cable companies distribution network. Like cable modems, it doesn't give a damn of what is connected beyond.

I hope you are right about it. I haven't seen anything specific about additional limitations.

BTW, if you are right, than all I could do is uplug a CableCard from a TV or Tivo, and plug it into the ATI tuner. One of the reviews I read seems to indicate there is more to it, and it is not as simple as that. But the article was short on specific, and it would not surprise me if it was wrong.

Joe

iirc, the cablelabs cert pertains to the installation of a card into a system in such a way that it maintains the integrity of the copy protect flags all the way to the monitor.

that precludes by definition a homebrew installation scenario and likely comes with a cert price tag that rules out most minor pc players.

i'm not surprised to hear that the cert "phones home" through the cable back channel.

I'll be interested to find out if I have to pay the digital/HD set top box fee for the ATI card when I get one. I can see it when you are borrowing TWC equipment, but not for a purchased TV tuner card. The fee is about $4, IIRC.
