gb,

i'm not surprised to hear that the cert "phones home" through the cable back channel.

Well, there are different levels of "phones home". Phoning home, transmitting info about the system it is plugged into would in my opinion be a more intrusive form of phoning home than just phoning home to verify that the card is still connected to the network and that it has the correct decryption keys etc.

I imagine that the cable card could be tied into some ID of the device it is plugged into, and refuses to work if it is plugged into something else.

Joe

PS: I could already envision a scenario of how to defeat the system:

1. But the tuner card from some online store
2. Buy a Dell System.
3. Swap your card in, Dell card out.
4. get cable card for the "Dell" system
5. Swap cards back
6. Return Dell system.
