geode00: On Chicago Public Radio the other day there was a discussion about the state of our healthcare system....one guy from Denver said he had no insurance and the estimated cost for the required heart bypass operation was going to be $150,000-200,000 at the major hospitals in Colorado. This dude researched things on the Internet and looked into medical tourism after seeing a 60 Minutes segment...he contacted a leading private medical center in New Delhi India. The head of cardiac surgery called and emailed him within 24 hours and he had a detailed quote for the same open heart surgery and re-hab period...the charge in India at a 1st class medical center was going to be LESS than $10,000. This man went to India with his son and everything went well and he was monitored for 3 weeks and had a totally successful outcome. In the U.S. they would push him out of the hospital within 5 days after charging close to $200,000 -- this pays for the very inefficient Insurance system, the hospital overhead, the medical malpractice coverage, etc...The care may actually be better in some overseas locations and available at a fraction of the cost...that should tell you something about how screwed up our medical system is right now.

The healthcare in the US right now is another source of terror for citizens.

I absolutely agree. Didn't Hillary try that once.. yes...didn't the pharmas and the AMA beat that down...yes. Of course it makes sense, and in the long run would cost less to insure everyone. Healthcare costs exceed cost of living raises by miles. And yet, people who don't have social security numbers because they're here illegally can get care that lifelong American citizen taxpayers cannot. That makes me ill, too.
