I completely agree with your analysis. Most people having been through a failed relationship, even multiples, will argue that it is more complicated than that. I wish everyone were honorable or even that most people were; the older I get the more I wonder about that.

Marriages for life made more sense when lives were fairly short. Maybe we should have a menu for marriages:

- civil union for any two adults rational or otherwise with the following flavors:

- trial marriage for those with a short attention span or who make bad decisions
- standard marriage for those willing to roll the dice
- limited marriage for those who are darn sure they will last only about, say, 5 years together
- permanent marriage for those willing to stay glued for life and for whom divorce will never be an option regardless of the circumstances

Marriage is a contract and right now it only comes in one, rather ancient, flavor. We should rethink the entire idea.
