You are making an erroneous assumption. You assume it is stored on the hard drive in the clear. It isn't. DRM requires all content to be encrypted at every stage. Even when it goes over the cable to the display, hence all of the hullaballo over DRM enabled monitors. And while I don't know it to be the case, I strongly suspect the key to decrypt is tied to the platform.
