Pete Seeger is a great American. One of the greatest. So said Johnny Cash in his defense in 1970 when he broke the blacklisting and invited him on his TV show. Seeger is definitely a peace activist and leftist. But so what? He was right about Vietnam and Iraq, wasn't he? Seeger's original leftism (originally called "communism"{ in the 30's) that has nothing to do with what the Soviet Union became. In fact it was the opposite. The big lie of the rightwing McCarthyists was that the original communist party from the 30's and 40's, born of the Great depression which greedy millionaires created, which simply stated the need for workingclass rights, was the same as the perversion of communism which the Soviets, China and Cuba make it, that is police states and military aggressors. Seeger's brand of liberalism had nothing to do with that and was in fact the opposite of it. More like the teachings of Jesus Christ. Share and share alike. This rightwing lie would be as if Abe Lincoln's brand of Republicanism were called the same as GW Bush's, when they too are in fact opposites. In fact the USSR became much like fascism, and McCarthy and his crowd were quasi fascists. One party military-industrial rule by the elite for the elite. Like Bush-Cheney's ideology exactly. So again the rightwing lies really damaged good people and our democracy.
