I think the only thought/rumor is whether or not AMD is using IMPROVED strain (SiGe based strain) or not. They have been using strained Silicon for ages already (one of the more popular forms are Dual Stress Liners, and stress memorization). They have certainly not stopped using all forms of strain all of a sudden. They *may* have difficulties with their latest form of strain because power hasn't improved much yet from 90nm to 65nm. But there are many other reasons for this too. Leakage probably increased because at 65nm AMD is using more aggressive feature sizes compared to 90nm AMD than Intel is using at 65nm compared to Intel's 90nm. I'm still a bit surprised though. I'd expected that either AMD's 65nm would have clocked a bit higher by now OR that power would have gone down a bit more going from 90nm to 65nm. Therefor I don't dismiss the thought/rumor that AMD's 65nm doesn't use the announced SiGi based strain yet. There simply isn't sufficient evidence available to either prove or disprove it. Just my 2c...

Rink

re: I think Smooth made a mistake, and meant strained silicon. I have seen no one else claim anything of the sort, and it makes no sense, anyhow. The strain, on the other hand, would be a feasible change in the face of problems.

Looks like I did (shooting from the hip). Sorry about that, I should have looked it up. Sorry for the aggravation...
