If true, that would mean I can buy a solar panel for my own roof for just under $1,000, not including the cost of installation.


Well, my math was wrong. I think it will be eventually possible to buy solar technology cheap, but maybe not that cheap....probably not unlikely that you will for $10/ft^2 or five times your estimate.

The typical measurement is expressed in $/W...I have quotes for our new home at ~$6/W. In Ca, the state rebates a reasonable portion of the investment. Installation cost is small. Unfortunately I am not in Ca and cheney's "energy task force" policies have led to a puny $2000 max fed rebate.
