But does it really matter that global warming and water temps in the gulf and carribbean approaching 90 degrees in late summer is possibly due to a host of factors natural, cyclical and man made? The feedback loops as a result of all this could be devestating for mankind.

My impression is that the reason Y2K did not turn into a catastrophe was that lots of businesses were sufficiently concerned about it to spend billions rewriting code. I suppose you think avian flu is also just another scam. Although I am not a scientist, it's apparent that the overwhelming consensus among climatologists is that global warming is real and not a scam. I think it would not be prudent to ignore their warnings simply because climate trends are cyclical, or that avoidance measures may be costly or inconvenient. It is almost impossible to build complete consensus on every issue. There will always be a few skeptics even on what the overwhelming majority consider indisputable historical fact, for example, the President of Iran's belief that the holocaust was a hoax. There was a philosopher, I forgot his name, who once noted that it is not even possible to prove with 100% certainly that you are at this moment awake and not merely dreaming. I agree and accept these overwhelming uncertainties. You are certainly free to believe what you want, but the overwhelming weight of the evidence that I have seen suggests that greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels have contributed substantially to global warming. Life is stochastic. Certainty is a luxury. And we must all place our bets. SC
