I wonder if the Barak/Clinton/Arafat proposal is still a politically viable one.

Not really sure what the exact details were of the proposal, other than land for peace. But the thing generally lacking on the Arab side is the idea that there should be a "Jewish nation" anywhere in the region. Even the soon to be released Arab peace plan I think precludes Jewish immigration and allows something to do with the right of return = present day Israelis can stay, but it's a mixed nation, not a Jewish nation. The thing lacking on the Israeli side is borders - where in the world do Israelis say Israel should end and the "other nation" begins?

However, at the moment, I can't for the life of me find a good reason why Gaza shouldn't declare independence with plans to reunite with their WB brothers once the borders of the WB get set, aside from potential to lose UN funds. But you figure if they pursued that route they could squeeze billions out of the "world community", and Gazastan could begin with the West Bank "tp be decided". Of course, that presumes the people of Gaza accept the idea of a Jewish nation at their border, which appears to not be the case.

Olmert's current approval rating, according to the latest poll, is 3%.

Abu Mazen is equally powerless, a figurehead whose only job is to beg for alms.
