I am not a pessimist as a rule but am becoming one about our economy and way of life. I think you are also correct in that is a bigger problem then the jihadi's. Not looking real forward to what is coming down the pipe for us. I really feel for my kids and grandkids.

>>1) Dems seem hell bent to raise taxes<<

I'm stepping up my program to roll over money from my regular IRA to my Roth IRA. Keeping my fingers crossed and hoping we don't switch to a national sales tax.

>>2) Demographics<<

I bet a lot of "old farts" without savings will end up working well past the normal retirement age.

>>3) The world is on the cusp of a real energy crunch<<

Yes, but when it gets worse then other sources will be tapped. I expect we'll eventually drill ANWR and all offshore areas, and develop nuclear. But major expansion of coal and oil shale may never get off the ground.

>>4) All the hysterical screaming about global warming... Kill off carbon based energy sources and those of us who are still alive will be back living in caves.<<

Come on, the carbon-based stuff will be gone eventually anyway. On a long-term planetary basis, why burn it all off in one giant pulse lasting a few hundred years? Surely humans have enough ingenuity to maintain civilization without fossil fuels. I think in the USA we'll have a big shootout between coal and nuclear, and nuclear will win. If so, then thirty years from now we'll be in the midst of a major nuclear plant build out. Solar and wind still have game, but they're long shots. I'm not fond of nuclear power, but what we're seeing is that environmentalists are gradually rolling over and dropping their opposition because of global warming.
