The original characterization was wrong.

Other than that his influence was good even as far as between religious groups within India. Muslims and Hindus had lived in India for centuries in relative peace until the British came in. They divided them against each other, as a way of gaining control over the country. So considering the degree to which the religious hatred had been fomented by the British, there was less violence due to Gandhi's influence than there would have been otherwise.
