I'm not a legal person, but it is my understanding that the Geneva Convention applies to POWS between countries in a declared state of War. There is no declared state of war against Iran by the UK.

The Iranians claim the Brits trespassed and have been detained. The Brits claim they did not trespass.

And finally if the US were to push for Geneva Convention, we'd have an issue explaining Gitmo.

So they should drop to the lowest common denominator, because the Iranians did it? And if the Iranians burn captives alive, should the UK do it? Just what limits, if any, do you put on the "They did it first so the UK should do it" concept?

What about the Geneva Convention and the rules against displaying pictures of captured soldiers? Iran has clearly violated them. Which raises the question - is there an agreed upon penalty? If you break the Geneva Conventions, what is supposed to happen to you?

At the very least the UK should announce that as a result of Iran breaking the Geneva Conventions with respect to the captured soldiers, they no longer feel obligated to extend the provisions of the GV to Iranian military.

Haven't you been listening, Elroy? Iktomi has just explained why nobody should expect Iran to obey the Geneva Conventions because they are 'not a country like us'.

Here you are, proposing practical reasons like reciprocity, and suggesting that Iran too should be shown it has something to lose if it keeps flouting the Conventions. Clearly you haven't gotten the memo.
