Your post gave me a chill. Literally.

How very sad...

I know that there is at least one person who has had mastectomy and been caner free and I am sure she will respond to your post.

Lately I have been reading that an MRI does a better job than
a Mammogram.. And the person reading the mammogram has to be top drawer too.

I will check around with my friends who have had BC to see if I can learn anything to contribute to your question...

I have three friends who had mastectomies when they were very young.. I say that because now they are in their seventies.. They are survivors.

In Boone every summer they have a Walk for Life event that goes on in a park for two days. The park has a round paved walk and one night candles are lighted for everyone who has succumbed... You light it for a friend.. and pay something for cancer research .. The whole ceremony broke me up so much the first time I went that I have not gone back..

Then there is a walk for cancer survivors.. You should see those who have survived.. Little kids... mothers, grandmothers..... all walking around this circle..

Just writing about it gives me joy and then sorrow for I have lost so many friends in the past 10 years .. ALL to the big C... From cervical cancer, breast cancer and biggest of all
LUNG CANCER. But we all were smokers.. Big time. It was the thing to do.. I did it but never got hooked..

Thank you for coming to this thread.

My adoptive mother had breast cancer twice- two different kinds (and also had uterine cancer and colon cancer- and survived 'em all.)

She had mastectomies for both cancers. The first was radical, because that's what they did when she had the first surgery, the second was more modified. She had radiation and chemo the first time, and just chemo the second time. She said chemo had gotten a LOT better since the first time she had it (early 80's, I think?). And a dear friend of mine had a mastectomy back in 2004, and just had reconstruction last summer. FWIW if she had it to do over, she would NOT do the reconstruction. My mother did not have reconstruction either. She just bought the silicone breast pads.

Sorry about your friend. I just read your post tonight........yesterday was my birthday ( I am getting sick of turning 29 ).

I survived two primary breast cancers without having any mastectomies from early 90's. Both were stage one.

My mom and sis both died of the disease. My sister had Inflammatory breast cancer and was stage 4 upon diagnosis.

I also work in med research so i know a bit about the illness and treatment............worked on Herceptin during the early development stage.etc etc etc.........it goes on and on and on as I've worked in the industry for lots of years.

What are the two different treatments that the different Dr's are recommending?

I have no problem discussing this on the thread but PM is OK too.

Men and women both need to learn more about the disease as everyone has women in their lives and all should know more about this illness. I don't mind a public discussion at all. It will probably bother others more than it will bother me!!!

Information is power!

I have done many walks for all kinds of cancers. One year I did two 60 milers ! I met a survivor who was 84 and she had done the walk also..........she was from Burbank and had never used an outdoor toilet before!! She was a kick and tons of fun!
