you sure paint a dismal picture.

It is a dismal picture, but an accurate one. We need illumination and it is available, if our leaders will look for it.

The first step in the problem solving process is understanding the problem. Our knowledge and comprehension of the enemy is incomplete and we are paying a dear price for that failure.

In the recent past I have concentrated my thoughts and writing on our military strategy and tactics and why they are not working. Presently I am trying to comprehend why we are making the military errors. Now I am convinced it is because our conventional military minds have concentrated on tactical military objectives and paid mere lip service to the hearts and minds piece. The military objectives we have fought for have all been short term - another error.

What we are missing are detailed studies and complete knowledge of the enemy and his motivations. In other words, we are fighting terrorists in the streets and wonder why we can't kill all of them. And we wonder how AQ can resurrect itself after we clean out most of their leadership. Wondering why does not hack it. We have to know why or we are doomed to committing the same mistakes over and over.

I tried to explain what I've learned here...

I've not heard anyone in our senior military leadership talking about these things. During the Cold War, We knew the Soviet Union upside down and inside out. We lack similar studies and knowledge about AQ and other Muslim militant orgs. That failure is hurting us in the worst way.
