As [New Zealander] Bob Jones said last century, military people are especially courageous against civilians: <One of the previous acts of a "brave" Argentine colonel who opted not fight the British but surrendered over 400 of his men was to shot a 16 Swedish girl and throw her in the trunk of his car. >

That applies to authorities in general, which is why they seek authority in the first place - it's great fun bossing people around, getting the money and girls.

On the cost of the war, there were also benefits. Such as the Falkland Islands remain British. Britain won, which is nice to do. It makes other thugs think twice about throwing their weight around. I see right now on CNN some Argentians burning a Union Jack. Good job they lost! They deserve to lose again if they are still taking that approach. Yay for Maggie and yay for Britain. Hooray for the soldiers who shoved thugs back where they belong.
