The mercury lasts forever. More people have died from mercury poison than radioactive poisoning. When it gets into the lakes it gets into the food chain. Mercury is just one of the many pollutants from burning coal. What about black lung? How many cancer cases each year from people living down wind of coal fired plants in China. Al Gore thinks burning carbon is indeed a catastrophic problem (I am not an Al Gore fan). I do not recall the number of pounds of waste from burning a ton of coal, but amount of radioactive material from a pound of U3O8 was aspirin sized. Would appear feasible to me to shoot it into the sun if other methods are not safe. And I do not think that safe methods can not be developed.

There are nuclear reactors occuring in nature. radioactive masterial is constantly being generated.
