i have heard of people in TX who in the 1960s installed exterior A/C registers so as to cool their outdoor patios on those 100+ degree summer days. nowadays if you drive around the hills of West Austin, entire ridges are crowded together with starter castles all positioned to capture the wonderful "view". they all have enormous, southwest-facing windows, often spanning two or three storeys in height, so that the entire side of the house can take in the "view". that's OK for temperate days like today, but from July to October it is beastly hot and having an entire side of a house directly exposed like this must turn the inside into an oven for about 8 hours a day. i can't think of a less energy-efficient design for a hot climate. the builders must sell these monstrosities to out-of-towners in February, who enjoy stepping out on the balcony when it is a mere 80 degrees. they forget they will need to add on 20-25 degrees in the summer.
